1. Overview
Syllabics.ca (“the Platform”) is an educational tool designed to support the learning and revitalization of Indigenous syllabics writing systems. The Platform provides interactive charts, reference materials, and Nation-specific dialect configurations. These Terms of Use (“Terms”) govern your access to and use of the Platform and its tenant subdomains (*.syllabics.ca).
By using the Platform, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please discontinue use.
2. Ownership and Copyright
All software, design, code, structure, layout, interface elements, and supporting materials on Syllabics.ca are the exclusive copyrighted property of the Platform owner. All rights are reserved.
2.2 Cultural and Dialect DataDialect configurations, orthographies, wordlists, and any cultural or linguistic materials provided by sovereign First Nations remain the exclusive intellectual property of those Nations.
The Platform displays this data only with permission and does not claim ownership or control.
2.3 No License GrantedExcept for the limited right to access the Platform for personal or educational use, no rights or licenses are granted to users.
Copying, extracting, reproducing, translating, redistributing, modifying, or reverse engineering the Platform or its contents is prohibited unless explicitly authorized by a separate written agreement.
3. Acceptable Use
You agree not to:
- copy, extract, or download dialect data or platform assets
- interfere with or damage the Platform, including using automated tools
- attempt to bypass technical protections
- impersonate or misrepresent affiliation with any Nation or organization
- use the Platform in any unlawful or harmful way
The Platform is intended for respectful learning and community use.
4. Automated Access & AI Prohibition
To protect cultural data and platform integrity, the following are strictly prohibited:
4.1 Automated InteractionNo bots, crawlers, scrapers, automated tools, or similar technologies may:
- load tenant pages (*.syllabics.ca)
- interact with JavaScript elements
- attempt to index dynamic content
- simulate user behaviour
- access PWA features
No content from Syllabics.ca or its tenant subdomains may be:
- used to train machine learning models
- incorporated into datasets
- ingested into AI systems
- mirrored or mass-downloaded
This applies to all users, companies, and automated systems.
5. Data Sovereignty
The Platform follows principles aligned with Indigenous Data Sovereignty and community control.
- Nations own their linguistic data outright.
- The Platform does not repurpose or redistribute Nation-owned data.
- Nations may request updates, corrections, or removal of their data at any time.
- The Platform is a technical steward, not a rights-holder.
Nothing in these Terms limits the inherent rights, jurisdiction, or cultural authority of Indigenous Nations.
6. Privacy and Data Collection
The Platform collects no personal information, names, login credentials, IP logs, or identifiers. The Platform uses no cookies.
6.2 Anonymous AnalyticsSyllabics.ca uses Google Analytics 4 with:
- IP anonymization
- aggregated reporting
- no demographic or advertising tracking
Analytics help improve performance but cannot identify individuals or Nations.
6.3 Tenant PrivacyTenant subdomains (*.syllabics.ca) may disable analytics entirely at the Nation’s request.
7. Educational Use Only
The Platform is provided for educational and informational purposes. Dialect data may contain variations, evolving spellings, or community-specific interpretations.
The Platform does not replace:
- Nation-authorized language teachers
- fluent speakers
- official linguistic documentation
Users should confirm linguistic details with appropriate community authorities.
8. Warranties & Liability
The Platform is provided “as is” without warranties of accuracy, completeness, or availability. The owner makes no guarantees regarding:
- correctness of linguistic content
- uninterrupted functionality
- compatibility with all devices or browsers
Nations may revise or withdraw data at their discretion.
Limitation of LiabilityTo the fullest extent permitted by law, the Platform owner is not liable for:
- errors in dialect data or orthography
- technical failures
- losses resulting from reliance on Platform content
- damages related to educational use or misinterpretation
Your use of the Platform is at your own risk.
General Provisions
The Platform may update these Terms as needed. Continued use after updates constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
11. Governing LawThese Terms are governed by the laws of British Columbia, Canada. Disputes will be resolved in the courts of British Columbia.
